More than 40 residents in East Toowoomba began organising weekly walks last month along Ruthven Street and nearby paths, marking a rise in neighbourhood fitness efforts.

Interest in local group exercise has grown as people seek low-cost ways to stay active without gym memberships or travel. Darling Downs Health recorded a 15 per cent increase in community wellness inquiries between January and June this year, reflecting broader demand for accessible outdoor activities.

Laurel Bank Park gardens offers a flat 2-kilometre loop popular for beginners, while the Picnic Point Escarpment walk provides steeper terrain for groups ready to advance. Both sites sit within short drives from central Toowoomba suburbs and connect to existing spring flower festival community routes that draw participants each September.

Choosing a route and schedule

Data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows adults who walk in groups average 7,500 steps per session, compared with 4,200 for solo walkers. Groups in Toowoomba often meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7am to avoid peak heat, with no cost beyond voluntary contributions for water at local cafes.

Building and sustaining the group

Start by posting a notice at the Laurel Bank Park noticeboard or on neighbourhood social pages, then confirm a first meeting date at least two weeks ahead. Rotate leadership among members to share duties such as checking weather or suggesting route changes. Participants should consult a local medical professional before joining any new exercise routine. Regular walks through Picnic Point can tie into the spring flower festival community events, keeping momentum through the cooler months ahead.
