Registrations for the Darling Downs Secondary Schools Athletics season open on July 15 at schools across Toowoomba.

The timing follows the end of winter rugby and netball fixtures, allowing students to shift focus to track and field events before the September interschool carnivals.

Local clubs and school programs

Students at Harristown State High School can join the athletics squad that trains twice weekly on the oval behind the main campus on South Street. The Toowoomba Athletics Club also runs a high-school pathway at the Middle Ridge Sports Complex on Hume Street, where coaches introduce events such as the 200 metres, long jump and discus to new participants.

Both programs accept students from Year 7 to Year 12 and link directly to the Darling Downs Secondary School Sport Association calendar.

Fees, dates and what to bring

The standard registration fee stands at $95 per athlete, covering insurance and entry to three carnivals, with an early-bird rate of $75 available until July 31. Last season 1,140 local students competed in the division meets. Athletes need a school sports uniform, running spikes or trainers, and a water bottle; the club supplies starting blocks and measuring tapes on site.

Parents should complete the online form through the school portal or the club website, supply a current medical form, and attend the compulsory induction session on July 22 at the Middle Ridge complex. New athletes receive a training schedule and event-choice guide at that meeting.

After sign-up, families can book a free skills assessment at either venue to match students with suitable events before the first squad session on August 4.
