Toowoomba's food scene reflects the city's character as a prosperous and self-confident regional capital with a strong agricultural base: the Lockyer Valley (Queensland's "salad bowl", producing 30%+ of Australia's fresh vegetables from the irrigation farms between Toowoomba and Gatton) and the Darling Downs (one of Australia's most productive grain, beef, and grain-fed cattle regions) provide an extraordinary produce base for Toowoomba's restaurants. The city's café culture (particularly strong on the Russell Street and Margaret Street restaurant strips) and the growing wine bar and boutique restaurant scene reflect the tastes of a city with significant professional and agricultural wealth.
Russell Street and the Toowoomba Restaurant Strip — Russell Street (Toowoomba's main restaurant and cafe strip, running north-south through the CBD) contains the highest concentration of the city's independent restaurants and cafes: the combination of heritage Queenslander architecture, the remarkable streetscape (Toowoomba's CBD is one of the most intact Victorian and Edwardian commercial streetscapes in Queensland), and the growing quality of the restaurants (including several genuinely excellent contemporary Australian options and outstanding coffee from the Toowoomba specialty coffee scene) create a food street with real character. The Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers Food and Wine Street Party (September, during the Carnival) is one of the best annual food events in regional Queensland.
Lockyer Valley Produce and Farm Gate — the Lockyer Valley (60km east of Toowoomba via the Warrego Highway) is one of Australia's most important fresh vegetable production areas: the roadside vegetable stalls (particularly at Gatton and Laidley), the Lockyer Valley Food Trail, and the excellent Gatton Showgrounds Farmers' Market (monthly) provide outstanding access to the freshest possible Lockyer Valley produce. The connection between Toowoomba's restaurants and the Lockyer Valley produce is one of the most direct and authentic in regional Queensland.
