Toowoomba's position on the Great Dividing Range (at 700m altitude, at the western edge of the Darling Downs) gives it excellent access to a remarkable variety of landscapes: the Lockyer Valley falls 600m below the Toowoomba escarpment to the east (30 minutes), the Darling Downs stretch west for hundreds of kilometres, Brisbane is 130km east (90 minutes via the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing and the Warrego Highway), the Granite Belt wine region is 90km south via the New England Highway, and the Condamine and Maranoa outback landscapes extend north-west. The combination of coastal access (via Brisbane, 90 minutes) and outback landscapes (immediately west) gives Toowoomba one of the most geographically varied day-trip positions in regional Queensland.
Queensland Granite Belt Wine Region — the Queensland Granite Belt wine region (the Stanthorpe and Ballandean area, 80km south of Toowoomba via the New England Highway, approximately 75-90 minutes) is Queensland's only significant cool-climate wine region and one of Australia's most distinctive: the granite soils and cool winters (Stanthorpe regularly records the coldest temperatures in Queensland) produce outstanding stanthorpe shiraz, verdelho, and the unusual Queensland-specific varieties that thrive in the Granite Belt's unique environment. The Granite Belt has approximately 50 cellar doors (Ballandean Estate, the oldest family winery in Queensland, Robert Channon Wines, and Sirromet Wines are among the most established), the extraordinary Girraween National Park (granite boulder landscapes and spectacular wildflower displays in spring), and the charming Stanthorpe township (one of Queensland's most pleasant country towns) make this an outstanding full-day Toowoomba day trip.
Main Range National Park and the Scenic Rim — the Main Range National Park (the Cunningham's Gap section of the Great Dividing Range, 50km east of Toowoomba via the Cunningham Highway, approximately 45-60 minutes) provides Toowoomba's finest wilderness day trip: the Cunningham's Gap walking tracks (the 4km return track to the Spicers Gap lookout, with views east over the Fassifern Valley, and the junction of the Main Range Lookout track) and the extraordinary subtropical rainforest at the gap provide an excellent half-day walking experience. The Mt Mitchell circuit (an excellent full-day walk for experienced walkers) provides more challenging wilderness walking within 90 minutes of Toowoomba.
