More than 40 emerging artists under 30 will debut new work at three venues in Toowoomba this month, with the first showcase opening on July 18 at the Empire Theatre.

The timing lines up with a national push to platform fresh voices after several high-profile surprises at this year's Emmy nominations and a Melbourne exhibition that highlighted isolation themes. Toowoomba organisers say the local program was planned well before those stories broke, yet it now sits inside the same conversation about who gets heard next.

Performances will run at the Empire Theatre on Ruthven Street and at a new pop-up space operated by the Toowoomba Arts Council inside the old technical college building on Margaret Street. A separate reading series organised by the University of Southern Queensland will take place in the North Toowoomba community hall on the second Tuesday of each month through December.

Council records show 187 applications were received for the 42 available slots, up from 124 last year. Entry to the July 18 opening night costs $22, with season passes available for $95.

Venues making room

The Empire Theatre has reserved two mid-week slots each month for the new artists, while the Margaret Street pop-up will host visual work and short performances on weekends. Both sites sit within a five-minute walk of the city centre, making them easy stops for people already heading to the weekly farmers market on Saturday mornings.

Tickets and dates ahead

Full programs go on sale July 12 through the Empire Theatre box office and the arts council website. Anyone wanting to catch the first wave should book before the end of next week, as the initial block of 150 seats sold out within 48 hours last year.
