Group Exercise Classes at Council-Run Facilities: A Guide
From Zumba at Milne Bay to aqua aerobics at Highfields, Toowoomba's council facilities are making group fitness more accessible than ever.
How we reported this

Milne Bay Aquatic Centre on Herries Street has rolled out its biggest timetable yet this winter, with group exercise classes proving increasingly popular among Toowoomba locals seeking social connection and fitness under one roof.
The push comes as more residents look for affordable, community-centred ways to stay active through the colder months, especially after a string of successful events this autumn highlighted the appetite for classes that combine movement, motivation and a friendly crowd. With national health bodies urging adults to clock at least 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise, group classes at council venues are emerging as both practical and welcoming solutions.
Spotlight on Local Council Venues
Two main centres offer a wide array of classes: Milne Bay Aquatic Centre, just west of Queens Park, and Highfields Fitness and Recreation Centre on O'Brien Road. Milne Bay is a hive of activity, hosting early-morning Body Pump, lunchtime Yoga, and evening Zumba-most in studios overlooking the gardens or the 50-metre pool. At Highfields, locals can join group cycling, AquaFit (ideal for joint health), and circuit training, with morning and evening options catering to shift workers and parents alike.
Beyond the big two, several smaller council facilities-from the Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre in the city’s southeast to the new outdoor exercise hub at Clewley Park-offer occasional pop-up Pilates and tai chi sessions. For many, the group setting is key. Whether you’re a longtime resident of Middle Ridge or new to the city’s northern suburbs, the regulars say these classes make it easier to show up and stick with a routine.
Prices, Participation, and Growth
Demand has climbed in recent years. According to Toowoomba Regional Council, Milne Bay recorded more than 57,000 group class attendances in 2025-a 9% jump on the previous year and an all-time high since renovations in 2018. Drop-in prices for group classes at both Milne Bay and Highfields currently stand at $14.50 for adults and $11 for concession holders, with multi-visit passes and memberships bringing the per-class cost even lower. Families looking to get children involved can enrol them in juniors’ multi-sport or dance fitness, with school holiday programs filling quickly most terms.
Classes generally require online booking through the council website, but limited walk-in spots are often available. The council’s 2026 Winter Program, launched on 1 June, introduced new evening FitBox classes and boosted Yoga capacity in response to steady waitlists for some sessions last term.
For practical planning, locals can download the most up-to-date class timetables from the Toowoomba Regional Council site or pick up printed schedules at the venues' front desks. Staff recommend booking early for peak after-work classes, but remind new joiners that quieter times-late mornings on Tuesdays at Milne Bay, for instance-are ideal for those who prefer a gentle start.
With Toowoomba’s spring events calendar (including the annual Carnival of Flowers community fitness challenge) just around the corner, council-run venues are gearing up for another busy season. For anyone considering a new fitness routine or simply seeking some community spirit, the next group class is no further than your local pool or rec centre-and there's still time to sign up this month.
