Toowoomba sits on the Darling Downs at 700 metres elevation, which means its winters are meaningfully cooler than the Queensland coast, and it is one of the few places in Queensland where you can reliably experience proper cold mornings. The city's famous parks and gardens take on a different character in winter, and the Carnival of Flowers in September is the event that bookends the season.
The weather
Toowoomba winter brings daytime temperatures of 14-18 degrees with overnight lows that can drop to 2-4 degrees, cold enough for a proper frost on the lawns of the parks. The elevation means Toowoomba sits above the clouds that sometimes settle in the Lockyer Valley below, and the views from the escarpment on clear winter days are outstanding.
Parks and gardens
Toowoomba is known as the Garden City for good reason. Queens Park, Laurel Bank Park and the Japanese Garden in Lake Annand Park are all maintained to a high standard year-round. In winter, the formal structure of the gardens is more visible without the full summer growth. The roses in Laurel Bank Park are particularly noted.
Escarpment lookouts
The Toowoomba escarpment lookouts, Picnic Point, Fraser Park and others, offer views across the Lockyer Valley to the east. On clear winter mornings, the views extend to the coast. These lookouts are popular for both sunrise and sunset visits and are accessible by car.
Darling Downs
The agricultural Darling Downs surrounding Toowoomba is genuinely productive country. Winter cropping is underway and the flat expanse of the Downs under winter light is striking. The nearby towns of Warwick, Stanthorpe and Clifton offer additional day trip options, with Stanthorpe's apple orchards particularly worth visiting.
