Empire Theatre Series on Ancient Tales Sparks Fresh Buzz Across Toowoomba Neighbourhoods

Empire Theatre on Neil Street opened its Odyssey Rewired film and discussion series on July 11 with three sold-out sessions already recorded.

The timing lines up with broader national interest in updated versions of old epics, which has pushed ticket sales at regional venues higher than last winter. Toowoomba's own arts groups see the chance to link those stories to everyday questions about travel, belonging and homecoming that matter to locals right now.

Venues drawing steady crowds

Screenings alternate between the Empire's main auditorium and a smaller program at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery on Ruthven Street, where staff added extra chairs after the first night. Both sites sit within walking distance of the central business district, so residents from Newtown and Rangeville have walked or taken short bus rides to attend.

Organisers scheduled the events on consecutive Thursdays through August, with each night pairing a short film clip and a 45-minute talk led by gallery educators.

Numbers behind the interest

Gallery records show 620 visitors through the doors in the first four days, compared with 410 for the same period last July. Adult tickets cost $18 and concessions run at $12, with a family pass available for $45 that covers two adults and two children.

The next session runs on July 18 at 7 pm and will screen excerpts followed by a walk-through of related artworks still on display at the Ruthven Street site.
