A new monthly performance series called Night Layers opened at the Empire Theatre on 3 July 2026 with a sold-out first show featuring three local ensembles.
The series grew from conversations that began in late 2024 among residents who wanted more small-scale live work in the city centre rather than relying on touring productions from Brisbane.
From initial idea to first ticket sales
Three core creators met weekly at the Toowoomba Art Society rooms on Ruthven Street to map out formats that could run on a modest budget while paying performers. They tested early versions in the courtyard behind the Laurel Bank Park pavilion before locking in the Empire stage for the regular dates.
One organiser tracked every expense from the start, showing that average production costs per night stayed under $2,800 once lighting and sound were shared across the three acts.
Numbers that shaped the final shape
Attendance records from the July opening listed 312 tickets at $28 each, with another 40 comps for local students. A second show is already set for 7 August at the same venue, and organisers have booked the space through December.
