The Toowoomba Odyssey Collective held its first open reading session at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery on 10 July 2026, drawing 180 participants who took turns delivering passages from the Odyssey alongside original pieces set in the Lockyer Valley.
The timing aligns with renewed attention to ancient narratives in film and television, giving Toowoomba artists an immediate outlet to adapt those influences without waiting for external productions to arrive.
Venues anchor the effort
Sessions rotate between the Empire Theatre on Neil Street and the Toowoomba Regional Library branch on Margaret Street, where organisers have secured free use of the community room every second Thursday evening through December. The collective also uses the open lawns at Picnic Point for weekend rehearsals that incorporate local Indigenous plant knowledge into retellings of the journey home.
Founding member lists show 142 paid participants at $25 annual dues, with an additional 38 volunteers handling sound and lighting borrowed from the University of Southern Queensland drama department.

Attendance records from the gallery event show 62 percent of participants came from suburbs inside the 4350 postcode, and the group has already booked a December showcase at the Empire that will charge $18 tickets with all proceeds returning to the library’s youth writing program.
