Emerging talent voices and the next wave to watch in Toowoomba

Three Toowoomba-based arts collectives have opened applications for a shared showcase that will run from 3 August through 28 August at the Empire Theatres complex on Ruthven Street.

The move arrives as the city prepares for its busiest cultural quarter, with several smaller groups reporting increased interest from residents under 30 who want space to test work before larger audiences. City data from the 2025 cultural participation survey showed 22 percent of respondents aged 18 to 35 had created original work in the previous year but only 4 percent had presented it publicly.

Venues opening doors

Organisers have secured rehearsal time at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery annexe on Margaret Street and performance slots at the Foundry Lane pop-up space behind Clifford Gardens shopping centre. Both sites will host free weekly workshops through July, covering script development, sound mixing and installation design. Past participants from these sessions have gone on to present at the 2025 Queensland Music Festival fringe events.

Residents in the Rangeville and Newtown neighbourhoods have already formed two additional reading circles that meet at the City Library branch on Victoria Street every Tuesday evening. These groups focus on short-form fiction and spoken-word pieces drawn from local life rather than established publishing lists.

Numbers and next steps

Applications for the August showcase close on 22 July, with a A$35 entry fee that covers two feedback sessions and basic technical support. Last year’s equivalent event drew 47 submissions and selected 19 works for display or performance. Interested artists can collect forms at the Empire Theatres box office or download them from the Toowoomba Regional Council website. Those selected will receive a small materials stipend and access to the venues for final rehearsals before opening night.
