Global Online Marketplaces Tighten Grip on Toowoomba Retail Margins
Overseas platforms continue to draw customers away from Darling Downs shops and services amid rising import volumes.
How we reported this

Toowoomba retailers recorded a 12 percent drop in in-store sales during June as customers shifted toward overseas online platforms for household goods and apparel.
The shift follows months of expanded advertising by low-cost international sites that deliver directly into regional postcodes, coinciding with higher freight costs for Australian wholesalers and cooler winter trading conditions across the city.
Along Ruthven Street, independent gift stores near the corner of Margaret Street have reported slower foot traffic, while operators at the Clifford Gardens shopping centre say repeat buyers now compare prices on their phones before purchasing. The Toowoomba Regional Council’s Buy Local campaign, active since March, has distributed 4,500 discount cards to residents in an effort to retain spending within the city.
Council economic data released 9 July shows Toowoomba’s retail sector employed 8,400 people at the end of May, down 180 positions from the same month last year, with average weekly earnings in the sector sitting at $1,050.
Supply Chain and Marketing Adjustments Underway
Businesses are responding by shortening reorder cycles and highlighting Australian-made stock on window displays. Several Ruthven Street owners now run weekly stocktake sales on Tuesday mornings to clear imported lines before new shipments arrive.
Chambers of commerce meetings scheduled for 18 July will discuss joint digital marketing with the Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise Network to promote same-day local collection options. Retailers who join the network can list inventory on a shared platform that targets customers within 50 kilometres of the city centre.
Owners should review their supplier contracts this month and test local wholesale alternatives before the next quarter begins, as further platform price cuts are expected ahead of spring promotions.
